It’s no longer just a growing trend, people and companies are becoming more socially and environmentally conscious.
At Big City Beards it's no different; we are always actively looking for unique solutions to reducing our environmental impact and support our local community. With a little effort and constantly asking how what we are doing will impact our environmental footprint, our product sample display is a great example of how we made an impact within our own community. We were able to design and develop a solution for our retailers to provide in-store scent samples for their customers that is:
- 100% Bio-Degradable and made from recycled materials,
- Uses reclaimed wood from a local Vancouver Island wood mill waste pile,
- Manufactured by a local Nanaimo company using no chemicals or inks.
Why is this important?
We believe it is good to operate our company by considering the affect it has on our communities, lives, and the health of the environment and atmosphere. Most product samples displays are manufactured using a variety of plastics that have a huge impact on the environment because they are not bio-degradable and plastic by nature is usually not recyclable. Like all product manufacturers, we need to support our retailers with information and marketing materials to help inform customers about our organic beard care products. As a result, with changing promotions and new products being launched throughout the year; that adds up to be a significant amount of plastic and non-bio-degradable advertising materials that are being shipped out to retailers across North America every year. That has a significant environmental impact in our communities!
Here are the major reasons why Big City Beards uses reclaimed wood for their product scent sample display:
Preserves Natural Resources & Directly Reduces Waste
By using reclaimed wood to create our scent sample display preserves natural timber resources by reducing the need for increased logging. We source the wood required for our scent sample displays from the waste wood resulting from the milling of custom cedar lumber and wood products. This repurposing of the waste wood is important as it helps directly reduce the amount of lumber that is thrown away within our local community. The display design allows for variations in the base size dimensions enabling Big City Beards to use and purchase the west coast red cedar wood waste cuts and pieces from the Mike Gogo Cedar Products mill waste pile only.
100% Bio-degradable, Made from Recycled Materials
Everyone knows how dangerous plastic can be for the environment. Plastics last hundreds of years before breaking down and when they do it results increased micro-plastic pollution, a current global issue. By using reclaimed wood, and 100% recycled cardboard for the insert, our product scent sample display is completely bio-degradable with no chemical residues. That means that not only do we reduce the amount of wood waste in our community, but it also reduces the environmental and social impact our company has our each of the communities of our retailers. Using natural materials that are bio-degradable directly reduces the amount of plastic ending up in landfills.
Our Sample Display Uses No Paints, Inks or Chemical Stains
Using chemical treating agents and inks that negatively affect our environment is a real problem. Using reclaimed West Coast Red Cedar wood provides a natural and rustic look and it also means that we don’t have to use paints, stains, and other related chemicals to refine the reclaimed wood. I-CAT Industries Inc, a Nanaimo based custom wood products company, provided the perfect solution by using their laser etching and cutting services. As a result, we are able to add branding and info to our product displays 100% chemical free. We are proud to support I-CAT, who have been active in their community helping local charities and events for over 20 years.
